Classes also include bag work and Sabaki, which is the core emphasis in "Sui Shin Ryu Karate". Sabaki is a system of techniques employed with the goal of turning an opponent's power and momentum against him or her and repositioning oneself to the opponent's "blind spot" to counterattack from a more advantageous position, this strategy of moving outside and to an opponent's "blind spot" is essential. Although Sui Shin Ryu is a fighting style that includes kicks, strikes, and punches found in other styles of karate, it also utilizes numerous throws, grabs, chokes, and joint locks often associated with Judo, Jujutsu and many other styles of martial arts. Students are able to practice this alone or with a partner more senior student's participate in full-contact sparring where strikes are not pulled and thrown with full force, has a number of tactical differences from light and medium contact sparring. It is considered by some to be requisite in learning realistic unarmed combat.
